Missing one or two teeth can really lower your confidence, particularly if the gaps are in a prominent position towards the front of your mouth. A removable partial denture can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. The tooth or teeth are fixed to a denture which will be moulded to the shape of your mouth, giving you back your confidence and restoring your smile.
If you lose one or two teeth you usually have three options available; a dental implant, a bridge or a removable partial denture. Often implants and bridges are unsuitable. This could be for many reasons such as the quality of the adjoining teeth or other issues that mean this type of treatment won’t prove successful. So, the best alternative is the denture.
Dentures have come a long way and they can improve the way that you chew and talk, preventing your existing teeth from moving and they can enhance the look of your teeth. Depending on your requirements a partial denture may be an excellent option either for the short term, as a temporary measure or for the longer term.
A partial denture is made from a resin base and the artificial teeth are inserted into a tailored mould which is taken from your mouth. A conventional denture will replace one or more teeth and they may feature clasps that can wrap around your existing teeth to secure them in place. The clasps are also made from resin material or they can be made from metal. Some partial dentures don’t need any clasps and will fit securely into the mouth. The fit of the denture is essential to ensure that the biting force is sufficiently distributed to avoid trauma and blend in as far as possible with your natural teeth.
Tooth replacement options require invasive treatment but the partial denture removes the need for this and it is much cheaper too. If you’re considering a partial denture it is always recommended that you speak to your dentist who will be able to advise properly. Depending on the material that’s used to make the partial denture, more teeth can be added to it over time.
Although they will take time to ‘break in’ a partial denture is a great option, allowing you to restore the appearance of your teeth and when they are in place it is very difficult to distinguish between your natural teeth and the artificial tooth.
